Stack-a-seat: modular school bench

Project type

Furniture design

Stack-a-Seat is a modular school bench designed to optimize classroom flexibility, comfort, and spatial efficiency. Developed through interviews with students and teachers, the project addresses common challenges in school furniture—bulky benches that are difficult to store, transport, and rearrange. The design brief called for a lightweight, stackable solution that encourages dynamic learning environments and collaborative classroom setups.

Inspired by modular systems such as folding furniture, stackable theater seats, and interlocking building blocks, Stack-a-Seat integrates fluid functionality with simple geometry. Its plywood form and tubular metal base create a smooth, ergonomic structure where the backrest folds seamlessly into the seat, allowing multiple units to stack compactly. This mechanism minimizes storage space, reduces classroom clutter, and simplifies transportation.

The bench’s open and curved form invites freedom of movement, enabling students to easily reconfigure seating for group or individual activities. Two units can also combine to form a larger bench, supporting versatile classroom layouts. Through a 1:5 scale prototype and functional model, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform static learning spaces into adaptable environments—encouraging collaboration, mobility, and engagement. Stack-a-Seat reimagines everyday school furniture as a tool for dynamic, student-centered education.
